Canada’s Updated WHMIS Requirements: How to Ensure Compliance

If you’re a supplier or user of hazardous products in Canada, challenging times are ahead. In January 2023, Health Canada published a final rule in the Canada Gazette to update the Hazardous Product Regulations (HPR) to align with more recent editions of the UN’s Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). These updates will impact the requirements for chemical suppliers to classify their products and develop safety data sheets (SDSs) and shipped container labels. The HPR updates will also impact employer responsibilities under the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), including requirements for worker SDS access, training, and shipped labels that Health Canada and Provincial/Territorial regulators require employers to maintain. We are currently within the 3-year transition period for the HPR amendments, and employers need to start getting a handle on these updates and how they affect their businesses so they can maintain compliance and provide the utmost degree of safety for their workers.
