Using Leading Indicators to Improve Safety Management

There are many webinars and articles about leading indicators at safety conferences and in EHS publications, and everyone seems to agree that they’re good things. But it’s not always clear to the average EHS professional what leading indicators actually are, how they improve safety, and what kinds of factors you need to consider if you’re going to effectively use them. This webinar is for them.

During this presentation, attendees learned that not all leading indicators are created equal and will better understand how to more effectively choose leading indicators that track the activities relevant to achieving safety objectives. We reviewed some of the key industry guidance on managing leading indicators, including OSHA’s educational materials and the new ANSI/ASSP standard Z16.1-2022 on “Safety and Health Metrics and Performance Measures.” We also provided concrete examples of what good leading indicators look like in practice and explained how leading indicators and predictive analytics work together within an effective, action-focused occupational health and safety management system, as modeled by standards such as ISO 45001.
