How Total Worker Health Initiatives Impact Corporate Sustainability Metrics

Recently, the International Labour Organization (ILO) added a new principle to the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. This landmark decision means that all governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations of ILO Member States commit to promoting a safe and healthy working environment.

This human right aligns seamlessly with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Total Worker Health® (TWH) initiative, which integrates the protection from work-related safety and health hazards with the promotion of injury and illness-prevention efforts to advance worker well-being.

It also supports the new ISO 45003 standard, which recognizes that employers are responsible for protecting both the physical and psychosocial health of their employees. This puts mental health within the scope of environment, health, and safety (EHS) management. Thus, the connection between Total Worker Health and corporate sustainability is the intersection of human capital management and human rights.
